How to Install Better Chat to Your Rust Server

What is Better Chat?

BetterChat is a plugin that can be used to revamp and replace Rust’s default chat system. It allows you to customize things such as the color of player’s names and even gives you the ability to add prefixes to make it easier to see which users are donators, staff members, etc. To install BetterChat on your server, you’ll need to ensure that you have Oxide installed. You can view our tutorial on how to install Oxide here.

How to Install Better Chat to Your Rust Server

  1. To begin, start by downloading the ‘BetterChat’ plugin by navigating to your game panel, select the ‘plugins’ tab, and click install on ‘BetterChat’. You can now skip to step four. Alternatively, you can install the plugin manually from here and follow the steps below.
  2. Connect to your SFTP via FileZilla (We have a guide on how to do this here).
  3. Upload the ‘BetterChat.cs’ file to your /oxide/plugins folder.
  4. You can now restart your server.
  5. By default, players on your server will have the [Player] prefix. To change this and configure the plugin, navigate to “/oxide/data/BetterChat.json” either through the file-manager on the Iceline panel or through FTP. You will be presented with a .json file similar to the one below.
  1. For this example, we’re going to change the prefix to ‘Member’. To do this, all you need to do is find the “Text”: “[Player]” field and change it to “Text”: “[Member]”. Below this, you can also change other parameters such as the prefix color through the use of hex codes.

These are the basic modifications that can be made through Better Chat, more in-depth information can be found on the official uMod page here.

Facing any issues?

The format is very important when editing .json configuration files so the use of a JSON editor or validation site will help with any formatting issues you might be having. Also, check your server console for any errors! Still having problems? Feel free to contact our support team.

Valheim Multiplayer/Co-Op

What Is Valheim?

Valheim is a viking survival game that allows its players to set out on their own path and make decisions on how they would like to play. You can build, battle, and conquer in Valheim! Players can explore the magnificent environment that is procedurally-generated throughout the world. Throughout your exploration, you may come up against vengeful primordial bosses of myth and legend. If a player is to kill these bosses they will be rewarded with trophies and be able to progress through the world! One of the best parts is that you can build your own ship and sail across the sea conquering and discovering new lands!

Valheim Multiplayer:

Valheim allows players to play the game in many different ways, you can play the game as a solo player or you can play online with your friends in a co-op mode! The game is great as a solo player, however, the game only gets better with friends! As more and more people are getting into Valheim they are wondering how can we play with friends? Valheim is still in an early access stage so there are numerous bugs in the game still that sometimes makes it difficult to connect with friends. The developers will continue to iron these out, however!

How to Join Your Friends Game:

The first thing that you want to do when trying to play Valheim with friends is to make your first character. You and your friend will have to both do this step.

Once you have both of your characters made, one of you will need to create a world for your other friends to connect to. You will be given a world seed, but you can ignore that for now. Make sure that when naming your server you choose something that’s unique and personal to your server. This will make it much easier for your friends to find and join your world. Also, another important note is to make sure that you have the ‘community’ server selected. You may also choose to set a password for your server to make sure that only the people who are given the password can connect. This will prevent things like random players from connecting and potentially ruin your world experience, this can include things like grief.

Once the server has been made, you need to have the creator join the server that was just created. It may take some time to load in so be patient and wait until you are dropped in by the crow. Your friend should now be able to join you by going to the server list and adding the name of the server you created in the filters. Then all they have to do is type in the password that you have set and they should be able to connect!

*NOTE* If your game is not visible you may have not selected the ‘community’ server.

Conclusion:

We hope that you and your friends can now play the massive game of Valheim together! Sometimes joining your friends can be tough since this game is still in its early access stage. However, the developers are working hard to make the game as best as it can be! We hope that you enjoy your Valheim experience and that this blog was helpful to you!

If you are looking to get started in Valheim you can purchase a game server from us by clicking this link: Start your Valheim hosting

How to Setup the Rust+ Phone App

The Rust+ App allows you to monitor server activity, view the in-game map live, chat with teammates and the most important feature is the devices function which allows you to monitor the state of your base, which includes how much upkeep you have on your tool cupboard, add smart switches to turn on and off devices as well as set up smart alarms to tell you when someone is around, in or attacking your base.

Downloading the Rust+ App

  1. Download the Rust+ app from the Google Play Store if you are using an Android phone or from the App Store if you are using an Iphone.
  2. Once installed, you will have to sign in using your Steam credentials. Even after installing the app from the Play Store or App Store, it is important that you check for updates in the RUST+ app itself.
  3. (Facepunch updates the app more often than the Play or App Stores do)
  4. You can do this by tapping the menu icon in the top left hand side of the screen, then tap the gear icon, then scroll down to “CHECK FOR UPDATES” Tap that button to make sure you have the latest version from FacePunch.

Enabling the Rust+ App on your server

  1. Open Rust and join your desired server. Once you are in-game, press the escape key. In the menu on the left, click on the RUST+ setting.

  2. A box will open displaying the server name and the status of the App on that server. It should say “Not enabled for this server.” Now click on the green “PAIR WITH SERVER” button. It will display “LOADING” Then the status will display “Enabled for this server.” Press escape to return to the game.

  3. Now click on the green “PAIR WITH SERVER” button. It will display “LOADING” Then the status will display “Enabled for this server.” Press escape to return to the game.

Pairing the Rust+ App on your phone.

  1. After you’ve clicked “PAIR WITH SERVER” in the previous step, you will get a notification on your phone if you are not in the app, tap the notification to open Rust+.
  2. Once the app opens you will be shown a “PAIR SERVER” screen. Now tap the green button in the bottom right corner marked “PAIR SERVER”

Conclusion

This completes the pairing setup between your Rust+ App and the Rust server you are currently playing on. You can also pair with multiple servers.

Now whenever you are offline, and you are killed, you will get a notification. You can now also see map information, days since last wipe, type of map, teammates online as well as live map info, team chat, paired in-game devices and Rust News and Updates.

Facing Any Issues?

Make sure that you have followed the tutorial step by step. If you are still facing issues after checking through the steps, you can always create a support ticket and we will respond back within our business hours.

How to Setup Rust Server Tags

What are Rust server tags?

Tags are additional bits of information that describe Rust servers to help players get a better understanding of what your server is like. With server tags on your Rust server hosting server, players can see information quickly such as how often your server wipes and what type of ‘mode’ you’re running (vanilla, roleplay, creative, etc). Up to three tags will be displayed and using them is a great way to draw more attention to your Rust server!

You can find the supported tags here.

How to Setup Server Tags

  1. Navigate to the Iceline Game Panel.
  2. Select your Rust server hosting services and navigate to the “Startup” tab.
  3. Within the start-up section of the game panel, scroll down until you find “Server Browser Tags” on the right-hand side.
  4. In the tags section, you can type up to three supported tags.

Below is an example of the correct format to use when entering server tags.

Facing any issues?

Keep in mind, if you have Oxide installed, the ‘vanilla’ tag won’t be displayed. This is due to Oxide classifying your Rust server as being modded. If you’re still having problems, feel free to contact our support team.
