What is a Server Operator?

In a Minecraft Server, there are a variety of different commands you can use to perform in-game actions. Some of these include /tp, /gamemode, /time, and more. While there are many commands in Minecraft, not all of them are accessible to normal players on the server. In order for you or others to be able to access these commands, you will need to be a server operator. Being opped will allow you to use all commands and essentially give you every permission on the Minecraft server. With that being said, being opped is not something that should be passed around lightly. Having this ability can allow one to potentially mess up your Minecraft server. In order to prevent this, you can either get a permissions plugin such as PermissionsEx or you can lower the OP level. In this guide, we will be breaking down how you can OP and DeOP players. We will also be explaining what OP levels are and how you can change it on your Minecraft server.

How to OP yourself

  1. Head to the Iceline Game Panel and select your server.
  2. Once you select your server, it should bring up the console. If you are not on the console page, press “Console” to the left of the panel.
  3. In the console, you will need to type “op yourusernamehere”. For example, you can type “op notch” which will set the user “notch” as a server operator
  4. Once this is typed, you will see a message in console similar to “opped playername”.

How to Deop a player

  • Head to the Iceline Game Panel and select your server.
  • Once you select your server, it should bring up the console. If you are not on the console page, press “Console” to the left of the panel.
  • In the console, you will need to type “deop playernamehere”. As a example, you can type “deop notch” which will deop the user “notch on the server.
  • After you type this command, you are going to see a message in the console similar to “deopped playername”.

Different Levels of OP

  1. Every OP level will inherit the same permissions as the level before it. For example, OP level 4 will have all of the permissions from level 1-3.
  2. Level 1 – This level is the lowest level of OP. It will allow the operators to bypass the Vanilla spawn protection.
  3. Level 2 – Operators will gain access to use command blocks. They will also be allowed to use the following commands: /effect, /give, /gamerule, /difficulty, /gamemode, /tp, /summon, /setblock, and /clear.
  4. Level 3 – With this level, operators can now use these commands: /ban, /op, /deop, /kick.
  5. Level 4 – Operators who are level 4 will be allowed to use every permission/command. This means they can use /stop.

How to Change the OP Level

  1. Head to the game panel and stop your server.
  2. To the left of the panel click on “File Management”.
  3. Once there, locate and click on “server.properties”.
  4. Locate “op-permission-level=” and set it to the level of OP you want.
  5. Press save and navigate to the Console.
  6. Start the server.
